TV Review: Gang Related

Violent gang-bangers who get sent to the military by their crime bosses to then come back and wreak havoc on the streets of LA are the focus of the new series Gang Related.

The show tells the story of one such gangster who goes one step further and infiltrates the LA PD Gang Unit in a way highly reminiscent of The Departed.

Similarities aside, Gang Related is an enjoyable drama that has a fair bit of potential as an ongoing series. It will need to head into unfamiliar territory though if it is to distinguish itself in an already crowded genre.

However a few episodes in, the characters are showing some promise and time will tell if it is a stayer in the television landscape.

Film Review: The Town

The popular Boston Crime sub-genre is expanded with the addition of The Town, a superbly directed film about bank robbers by Ben Affleck.

It tells the story of Doug MacRay who robs banks for a living and makes the mistake of falling for one of his victims. It presents a typical crime doesn't pay story in a unique way through its use of larger than life supporting characters and drab working-class locations.

The Town goes a very long way to establish Affleck as an assured and mature director and leading man. It is almost as good as The Departed in some respects and is well worth a watch for the crime movie enthusiast.

3.5/5  Go to town.

Film Review: Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene is a 2011 independent film directed by Sean Durkin and starring Elizabeth Olsen. It tells the story of a young woman called Martha who escapes a cult and goes to stay with her sister and her brother in law.

Martha is terrified and extremely messed up from her experiences in the cult. The reasons for her terror are gradually revealed to the viewer through flashbacks that begin to get muddled up in the present time which causes increasing stresses for her family as her behaviour become increasingly bizarre.

Martha is unable to articulate the reasons for her unravelling mental state and as a result may be bringing the danger the cult poses closer to home.

This is an impressive film that asks many more questions than it answers and the impact of the story will be felt long after it finishes. Martha Marcy May Marlene is disturbing, clever and effectively made.

4/5 Drink The Kool Aid

Documentary Review: The King of Kong

The King of Kong details the previously unexplored territory of competitive retro gaming. It follows a contender for the official highest score at playing Donkey Kong which is considered one of the hardest video games to master.

The documentary tells the story of Steve Weibe, an unassuming family man who sits somewhere on the autism spectrum and his ongoing efforts to get the reigning champion of Kong, Billy Mitchell to face him in a live Donkey Kong standoff that is moderated by judges and officially recognised.

Billy Mitchell is extremely reluctant to face Weibe and kind of gets made out to be the villain of the piece due to his hesitance to compete and possibly get defeated by his earnest rival.

The King of Kong is a fascinating look at a unique sub-culture and is surprisingly gripping despite or because of it's obscure subject matter. It is a competent but at times biased documentary that continues to impress long after its debut.

Film Review: Limitless

Limitless is about a down and out writer called Ed Morro played by Bradley Cooper who is struggling to find inspiration to finish his first novel. In a chance encounter with his ex brother in law Morro is given a new smart drug that is able to help him use his brain to it's full capacity.

The drug allows Morro to become truly brilliant but he soon finds that all good things come with a price.

That is the premise of Limitless, the ultra stylish adaption of The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn as directed by Neil Burger. The film wisely capitalises on the charm of its leading man and uses visual effects effectively to show the impact of the drug on Morro's perception. The film also manages to lift the quality of the storyline of the novel in a rare win for the movie in the book versus movie debate .

Limitless is quite simply a bit of a surprise, a film that you go into with very little expectations that you will find yourself enjoying far more than you would expect.

TV Review: The Night Shift

I went into watching the night shift thinking it was a horror show but it is a medico comedy but not a funny medico comedy like Scrubs was most of the time.

Here's the setup. There is an ER ward in San Antonio near a military base and the show is about the impossibly perfect looking and evenly racially represented doctors who work there. They live, love and breathe high stakes medicine every night anchored by bad boy Topher. Seriously who would even call their kid that?

Anyway they are all ex military and are constantly butting heads with a no-nonsense hospital administrator played by Freddie Rodriguez who is totally slumming it in this role.

All I can say is that it is as bad as it sounds and I don't really recommend it.

TV Review: Arrow

The CW series Arrow tells the story of Oliver Queen, a bored, rich playboy who gets marooned on a mysterious island and is then presumed dead. Five years later he is rescued and returns to his hometown with a plan to become a street level vigilante ala Batman known as the Arrow, because you know, he shoots arrows.

Parallels to Batman aside, this adaption of DC Comic's Green Arrow is a bit of mindless fun and the show really does improve substantially as it goes along. The cast is engaging, however they are often hamstrung by romantic sub-plots and clunky dialogue but for the most part Arrow is the kind of show that you can watch to take your mind off the world for a bit. All shows can't be Breaking Bad you know.

3.5/5 Generally hits the mark.

Film Review: Contagion

Contagion is an ensemble film by Steven Soderberg about the effects of a super flu-like pandemic on the global population and a macro view on the attempts by health authorities to contain the outbreak.

It boasts a fantastic cast, among them Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Lawrence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow. Somehow Contagion manages to be entertaining and highly informative at the same time. It is an extremely ambitious movie and for the most part it succeeds in it's lofty goals. You will find that you are a bit more germ-phobic after watching it. Contagion is by far the best movie about an outbreak to date.

4/5 Time to get ill.

TV Review: Crisis

Crisis tells the story of a bunch of wealthy and privileged kids from a private school who are kidnapped and then used as leverage for their powerful parents to carry out various tasks for kidnappers who have an elaborate plan to get revenge on the CIA.

It is a fast and breezily enjoyable action thriller with just enough edge to be quite enjoyable if you give it a chance.

Sadly NBC has axed the show so there will only be one season. The good news is that means that the story will not be drawn out and the conclusion is coming within 12 episodes. If you like shows like Flashpoint or NCIS you will like Crisis.

3/5 Worth a shot.

Hollywood Tragedy: The Fatty Arbuckle Scandal

Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle was a highly regarded silent movie star who was considered by some to be almost as talented as Charlie Chaplin. It all fell apart after a wild night in San Francisco when a young woman died in scandalous circumstances and soon Arbuckle's promising career was over.

Fatty Arbuckle was born in 1887 in Kansas and moved to California with his family and he worked in the entertainment industry from the age of eight onwards and eventually became a bit player in silent films.

Fatty Arbuckle

Around 1914 Arbuckle began to direct and star in his own films in which he found great success and new-found popularity and then his career took off. His notable films included Mabel and Fatty Viewing the World Fair in San Fransisco and Brewsters Millions among others.

Arbuckle couldn't have known that despite his prodigious comic talents and successes that all of his achievements would soon be for nothing as an incident was soon to occur that would destroy his reputation and ruin his life forever.

On September 5th, 1921 a party was hosted by Arbuckle's roommate at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco and a young starlet called Virginia Rappe attended as a guest. During the party Virginia Rappe was found seriously ill and the hotel doctor came to check on her health and then prescribed morphine for her symptoms. Two days later Rappe went to hospital near death.

Virginia Rappe

A friend of Rappe's at the hospital told a doctor that Fatty Arbuckle had raped the young woman at the party and caused her to be ill. Rappe died one day later from Peritonitis which is an infection of the abdomen caused by a ruptured bladder.

The police were called and the investigating officers decided that the young starlet's ruptured bladder was caused by Arbuckle's weight and that there was merit in charging the actor with rape and murder even though there was only a hearsay witness to accuse Arbuckle.

This is where the story got extremely murky. Rappe's manager claimed that Arbuckle had raped Rappe with a piece of ice which then got changed to a Coca Cola bottle in a later version of the tale by the Hollywood rumour mill.

The subsequent case became a major scandal largely driven by William Randolf Hearst's newspapers which depicted Arbuckle as a sleazy, disgusting man who was purely motivated by sex and lust.
Arbuckle was tried three times but was eventually found not guilty due to a lack of evidence.

Arbuckle's career never recovered from the scandal and his name became synonymous with rape and depravity despite the not guilty verdict and subsequently several of his films were destroyed. He went back to working as a director under an alias and died at age 46 of a heart attack.

It is widely believed that Arbuckle was not guilty of the crimes of that he was accused and that he was a victim of a shakedown by unscrupulous characters and an ambitious prosecutor. However what is beyond debate is that is that it was an incredible tragedy that Virginia Rappe died so young and painfully and was also unable to tell her side of the story. Because of this the entire truth will probably never be known.

TV Review: Vikings Season One.

Vikings is a surprisingly good original History Channel series that details the early days of Viking raids on the UK. Despite the sometimes shonky Visual Effects, Vikings is a highly enjoyable tale about jealousy, violence and betrayal in the vein of Game of Thrones. It has a lot of potential as shown in the first season and has the legs to become a sleeper hit.

3/5 Pretty Entertaining

TV Review: Crossbones

Crossbones is a thrilling new pirate series starring John Malkovitch. It boasts impressive production values and a cracking ensemble cast. Malkovitch plays the legendary pirate Blackbeard who is trying to get his hands on a British navigational device for nefarious purposes. The series starts out strong and has a lot of potential.

3.5/5  Ahoy!

TV Review: Penny Dreadful

The new Showtime series Penny Dreadful is a gothic horror set in Victorian England. It is a tastefully done mash-up of several horror classics such as Dracula, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.

Any similarities to the hunk of crud that was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie will be swiftly forgotten as the viewer enters this rich and exotic world of spirits and class.

Penny Dreadful is written by Sam Mendes of Skyfall fame and partly directed by Juan Antonio Bayona the director of the atmospheric chiller The Orphanage so the show has a bit of pedigree to it to sweeten the mix.

The casting is absolutely spot on. The leading lady Eva Green is as mysterious as she is beautiful. Veteran actor Timothy Dalton triumphantly returns to the screen and brings out the best in his younger co-stars especially Josh Hartnett who has grown tremendously as an actor.

Penny Dreadful is a fantastic new series and is well worth checking out.

4/5 Bloody Brilliant!
